Marvel Zombies Review (2025): Brutal Action, Zombie Thanos & Missed Potential
![]()
A Gory Spin-Off from the Marvel Universe
Marvel Zombies is the kind of “What If turned nightmare” project Marvel fans have been both excited and skeptical about. For me, it was a mixed bag: I liked it for its gritty fight sequences, Blade Knight’s strong presence and the sheer horror of seeing some of Earth’s mightiest turned into flesh-eating monsters. But I also found flaws in its rushed storytelling, heavy-handed “woke” touches, and an ending that feels more like a teaser than a true conclusion.

It’s a one-time watch for entertainment, but not yet at the level of the original Marvel Zombies comics that set the gold standard for undead superhero horror.
What If … Zombies? Revisited
The series spins directly out of the What If…? zombie episode, placing us around five years after the outbreak. Earth is now a wasteland, the Avengers we once knew are undead threats and survivors must find a way to endure against impossible odds.
The lineup includes Kamala Khan, Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, Kate Bishop, Shang-Chi, Blade Knight (my personal favorite, whom I call “Moonlight Blade”) and others. Their mission? Survival, reunion and maybe, just maybe, redemption.

This setup had the potential to blend horror, tragedy and superhero spectacle and in parts, it worked.
What Works: Brutal Action, Strong Characters & Horror Thrills
⚔️ Epic Fight Sequences
The fight scenes are genuinely well done. They carry weight, brutality and creativity. Watching Blade Knight cut through hordes of zombies or Ghost zombie, Infinity Hulk smash through armies and even Thor’s terrifying zombie presence left a lasting impression.
💥 Infinity Hulk & Zombie Thanos
Two standouts: Infinity Hulk’s raw strength, which makes him one of the most terrifying presences in Marvel animation and the jaw-dropping reveal of Zombie Thanos with the Infinity Stones. That single image might just be the most haunting moment in the series.

❤️ Red Guardian & Yelena’s Bond
The familial bond between Red Guardian and Yelena Belova is a heartwarming anchor in an otherwise bleak narrative. Their humor, sacrifice and emotional exchanges balance out the relentless gore.
🎭 Ambition & Tone
For Marvel Animation, Marvel Zombies is one of their boldest swings yet. It doesn’t shy away from gore, horror, and brutality something MCU fans rarely get in mainline films.
Where It Falters: Plot Holes, Woke Tropes & Unsatisfying Climax
⏳ Rushed Storytelling
At just four short episodes, the narrative feels more like snapshots than a fleshed-out arc. Key transitions are skipped and motivations aren’t always clear.
🧩 Missing Depth
The show doesn’t explain the virus origin, nor does it explore much of the wider world’s collapse. It assumes viewers know enough from What If…? and rushes into action.
⚖️ The “Woke” Problem
As much as I liked Kamala Khan’s presence, the way she was written felt forced. Making her the “chosen perspective” without organic buildup hurt the narrative. Marvel sometimes pushes too hard instead of letting characters grow naturally.
❌ Weak Ending
The finale feels less like resolution and more like setup. Instead of delivering closure, it leaves us with open questions. Yes, that’s intentional for a potential Season 2, but it also robs Season 1 of emotional payoff.

Blade Knight Rising & Kamala’s Burden
🌙 Blade Knight (Moonlight Blade)
For me, Blade Knight is one of the best parts of the show. His design, action sequences and grit make him feel like a natural fit for a zombie apocalypse. He’s the kind of character Marvel should push more, instead of recycling the same roster.
⭐ Kamala Khan
She’s positioned as the viewpoint character, the young hero who loses innocence in a collapsing world. While that makes sense for the narrative, the execution often feels like convenience rather than genuine growth. I enjoyed her role in bits, but the heavy handed approach left me unconvinced.
Zombies vs Comics: Where It Diverges
The original Marvel Zombies comics are infamous for their extreme gore, twisted humor and uncompromising horror. The show, by comparison, feels tamer:
- Zombies in the comics are grotesque, cannibalistic and morally corrupted. In the show, they’re more like superpowered monsters.
- Key arcs and characters from the comics are missing or heavily altered.
- The tone is more restrained, fitting for Disney+, but less impactful than the comics’ raw horror.
So yes as I felt watching Marvel Zombies doesn’t follow the regular comic arc. It’s more of a spin on the MCU’s multiverse experiment than a faithful adaptation.

“What If” They Do a Season 2?
The open ending leaves the door wide open. Scarlet Witch’s alternate reality, Zombie Thanos with the Infinity Stones, and the fragmented survivors all suggest more stories ahead. If Season 2 happens, here’s what I hope Marvel does:
- Stick closer to the comics — embrace the darker arcs and raw stakes.
- Expand episode count — more time to build atmosphere, characters and lore.
- Balance characters better — no forced leads; give everyone meaningful arcs.
- Explore the multiverse — don’t just confine it to Earth; bring in alternate timelines, cosmic threats, and deeper horror.
- Clarify rules — how the infection spreads, why certain heroes turn, and what the stakes really mean across the multiverse.
If Marvel can fix these gaps, Season 2 could be the true zombie epic fans are waiting for.
Verdict: Fun Ride, But Leaves You Wanting More
Marvel Zombies is a bloody, entertaining diversion in the MCU multiverse. It has strong action, standout moments (Blade Knight, Infinity Hulk, Zombie Thanos) and some heartfelt character beats. But it also feels rushed, overly “safe” compared to the comics and hampered by forced writing choices.
For me, it’s a one-time watch enjoyable in the moment, but not groundbreaking. With better writing and a bolder vision, Season 2 could be where Marvel finally embraces the full potential of its undead playground.
Until then, Marvel Zombies remains exactly what its name suggests: a shambling, half-alive version of what it could truly be. Cheers – Comics Byte!!
