What happens when Quentin Tarantino’s fearless bounty hunter crosses paths with the world’s most famous masked swordsman? Django/Zorro delivers an official sequel to Django Unchained, bringing together two legendary heroes in a thrilling Western adventure that many fans still don’t know exists.
Most movie fans know Django Unchained as Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar winning revisionist Western that introduced audiences to the unforgettable bounty hunter Django. What many fans don’t realize, however, is that Django’s story didn’t end with the movie.

In 2015, Dynamite Entertainment and Vertigo Comics joined forces to publish Django/Zorro, an official sequel written by Quentin Tarantino alongside acclaimed comic book creator Matt Wagner. Rather than producing another film, Tarantino chose the comic book medium to continue Django’s journey and in the process created one of the most unexpected crossovers in modern comics.

Set several years after the events of Django Unchained, the story finds Django working as a bounty hunter across the American Southwest. During one of his travels, he encounters an unusual man named “Diego de la Vega”. Sophisticated, wealthy and highly skilled with a sword, Diego immediately intrigues Django. More importantly, he is the first affluent white man Django has met who seems completely unconcerned with the color of his skin.
As the two men grow acquainted, Django discovers that Diego is none other than the legendary “Zorro”.

What follows is a partnership unlike anything seen in either character’s history. Django joins Diego as a bodyguard, but their relationship quickly evolves into a friendship and a shared mission. Together, they confront powerful forces exploiting indigenous communities and forcing them into brutal servitude.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the story is how it expands Django’s understanding of oppression. Having escaped slavery himself, Django learns that injustice takes many forms and affects many different peoples. Under Diego’s guidance, he realizes that the fight for freedom extends far beyond his own experiences.

The comics also delivers a memorable visual twist: Django eventually dons the iconic mask of Zorro, creating a striking image that combines two of popular culture’s most recognizable heroes.
For comic book fans, the project represented a dream collaboration. Tarantino brought his trademark dialogue, sharp characterization and Western sensibilities, while Eisner Award winning creator Matt Wagner contributed his extensive experience with Zorro comics and adventure storytelling.

Published by Dynamite Entertainment in collaboration with Vertigo Comics, the complete story was later collected into a 222-page graphic novel edition released on November 11, 2015.
What makes Django/Zorro particularly interesting today is its place in comic book history. Long before cinematic universes dominated entertainment, this crossover demonstrated how two seemingly different heroes from different eras and mediums could share a compelling narrative. It also remains the only official continuation of Django’s story approved and co-written by Quentin Tarantino himself.

For fans of Westerns, pulp heroes or Tarantino’s work, Django/Zorro is more than just a crossover. It is a fascinating “what if” brought to life, showing what happens when a freed slave turned bounty hunter joins forces with the masked champion of justice.
And while many moviegoers still wait for another Django film, the truth is that Django’s next adventure has already been told on the pages of a comic book alongside the legendary Zorro.

Want to read Django/Zorro after learning about it? That’s easier said than done! While the digital version is still available on Amazon Kindle, physical copies have become quite scarce over the years. If you’re hoping to add the hardcover or trade paperback to your collection, you’ll need a sharp eye, a little patience and perhaps a bit of the same luck that follows Django himself.
