Premchand’s Timeless Tales Now in Full Colour: A Graphic Revival of Indian Literary Heritage
July 31st marks the birth anniversary of Munshi Premchand, one of the greatest literary minds of India. Known for his powerful narratives rooted in realism and social reform, Premchand’s stories have shaped generations. From novels like Godaan and Nirmala to his soul-stirring short stories, his works continue to resonate deeply with readers even today.

This year, fans of Indian literature have a unique reason to rejoice – Divine Justice and A Tale Of Two Oxen: Classic Indian Stories, a new graphic novel published by Westland Books in collaboration with Pratilipi Comics, reimagines two of Premchand’s classic tales in a stunning comic format.

Divine Justice (Khudai Fauzdar)
Set against the backdrop of moral decay and fear, this story introduces us to Seth Nanakchand, a wealthy man whose conscience is as fragile as his fortune. His paranoia takes hold when anonymous threats arrive, hinting at a looming robbery. What unfolds next is a gripping tale of poetic justice, where Premchand blurs the line between man-made law and divine retribution.

A Tale of Two Oxen (Do Bailon Ki Katha)
Through the emotional journey of Heera and Moti, two oxen separated from their familiar lives, Premchand weaves a gentle but powerful story about loyalty, struggle, and unspoken bonds. Their resilience mirrors the strength of the oppressed and their dignity in the face of hardship. It’s a heartfelt exploration of kinship – both animal and human.

A Contemporary Canvas for a Classic Voice
Presented in 72 richly illustrated pages, this graphic novel is an AI-enhanced visual adaptation. While it stays true to the soul of Premchand’s storytelling, the format makes it accessible to modern readers, especially younger audiences discovering him for the first time. The vivid colours, expressive panels and narrative flow ensure the stories are immersive yet respectful of their original depth.

This is more than just a comics, it’s a bridge between the past and the present, a gateway to one of India’s greatest literary voices.
