He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Review: A Nostalgic Return to Eternia That Delivers the Power!

Loading

By the Power of Grayskull! He-Man finally arrives on the big screen with epic battles, beloved characters and enough nostalgia to make every lifelong fan smile.

Yesterday, I walked into an IMAX screening with a huge smile on my face and even bigger expectations. Like many fans from the 80s and 90s, my introduction to He-Man came through weekend television broadcasts on DD National that became a ritual in countless Indian households. The moment that familiar He-Man logo appeared on screen, it instantly transported me back to those childhood mornings spent waiting for adventures from Eternia.

Thankfully, this new live action adaptation understands exactly what makes He-Man special.

Without venturing into major spoiler territory, the film begins in Eternia, introducing a young Prince Adam during his training days under Man-At-Arms. Right from the start, the filmmakers establish Adam as a young man struggling to live up to expectations. His relationship with his father plays an important role in shaping the character and gives the story an emotional foundation beyond the action.

The peaceful kingdom doesn’t remain peaceful for long. Skeletor launches an attack that sets the entire adventure in motion. Fans of the classic franchise will immediately recognize several familiar faces, including Teela, Fisto, Ram Man, Mekaneck, the Sorceress, and many others. The opening sequences in Eternia are visually impressive and effectively capture the fantasy world that fans have imagined for decades.

One of the film’s biggest surprises is how it transitions from Eternia to Earth. Prince Adam’s journey to our world creates a fascinating fish-out-of-water scenario. Rather than immediately becoming the legendary hero, Adam spends years searching for the lost Power Sword while trying to navigate ordinary life.

The Earth based segments are surprisingly entertaining. Adam works a regular job, deals with workplace politics, and attempts to fit into modern society while never giving up hope of returning home. These moments provide humor without undermining the character and help establish Adam as more than just a powerful warrior.

A particularly memorable sequence involves a comic shop and the rediscovery of the legendary sword. Eagle-eyed comic fans should keep their eyes open throughout these scenes because there are several fun Easter eggs hidden in the background. Spotting references to classic comics and collectibles adds another layer of enjoyment for longtime pop-culture enthusiasts.

Once the story shifts back toward Eternia, the film truly finds its rhythm.

The world has changed dramatically since Adam’s disappearance. The surviving heroes are older, battle-scarred, and struggling to hold onto hope. Seeing characters like Man-At-Arms, Teela, Roboto, Fisto, and Mekaneck reunite creates some genuinely emotional moments. The film effectively portrays the consequences of years spent under Skeletor’s shadow.

And then comes the moment every fan has been waiting for.

When Prince Adam finally raises the sword and embraces his destiny, the theater erupted with excitement. Watching the transformation into He-Man on the big screen is everything fans could hope for. The sequence feels earned, powerful and respectful to the source material.

The action throughout the film is excellent. Battles are energetic, visually impressive, and filled with iconic characters from both sides of the conflict. Skeletor’s forces, including Evil-Lyn and Trap Jaw, provide formidable opposition, and the large scale confrontations feel appropriately epic.

Speaking of Skeletor, Jared Leto delivers a memorable performance. His interpretation embraces the character’s theatrical nature while maintaining a sense of menace. His trademark laughter becomes one of the defining aspects of the villain and helps distinguish this version from previous adaptations.

The supporting cast also deserves praise. The actors portraying Prince Adam, Teela, Man-At-Arms, and the rest of the heroic cast bring sincerity and energy to their roles. Nobody feels out of place and the ensemble chemistry helps make Eternia feel like a living world.

As a lifelong fan who owned He-Man and Skeletor action figures, collected comics and spent years immersed in the mythology, I appreciated how much respect the filmmakers showed toward the franchise. There are references and surprises scattered throughout the movie, including a delightful nod to the 1987 live-action adaptation starring Dolph Lundgren that longtime fans will definitely recognize.

That said, the film isn’t perfect.

My biggest complaint involves the music. While the soundtrack works well overall, I desperately wanted more of the iconic He-Man theme and musical cues that defined the classic animated series. The film does acknowledge that legacy, but I would have loved to hear those familiar sounds much earlier and more frequently.

I also wanted more Battle Cat.

Cringer is absolutely lovable and steals several scenes, but fans hoping for extensive Battle Cat action may leave wanting a little more. Hopefully future installments expand on that aspect of the mythology.

The movie also includes three post-credit scenes, so don’t rush out of the theater. Fans of the original animated series will be particularly pleased by one of the surprises waiting at the end.

Ultimately, this is a film made with genuine affection for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. It successfully balances nostalgia with modern storytelling, introduces classic characters to a new audience, and delivers enough action and heart to satisfy longtime fans.

Whether you grew up watching He-Man, reading the comics, collecting the toys, or are discovering Eternia for the first time, this movie offers an entertaining adventure that celebrates everything fans love about the franchise.
