Absolute Batman wasn’t simply another costume redesign or alternate universe gimmick. DC decided to reimagine Bruce Wayne from the ground up. Instead of the familiar billionaire image, readers were introduced to a version carrying a very different energy and perspective. It immediately felt like DC was taking risks again, something readers have often wanted publishers to do.

While visiting stores, many readers also started picking up other comic titles, including books from Image and various publishers. In simple terms, one successful title was creating foot traffic for the entire comics ecosystem.
That’s something comic fans sometimes forget: a healthy comics industry isn’t DC versus Marvel versus Image versus independent publishers.

When a comic becomes a phenomenon, everybody benefits. Local comic shops benefit. Smaller creators gain visibility. Readers discover new stories. Publishers see more engagement. The industry wins.
For years, people have repeatedly declared comics “dead” or “dying.” Yet moments like this tell a different story entirely. Readers are still hungry for exciting ideas; they simply want stories that feel fresh and worth following.
The Absolute Universe appears to understand that perfectly.
