Zoraver and the Lost Gods: An Indian Historical Graphic Novel Blending Mystery and Adventure
![]()
A globe-trotting adventure from London to Harappa in search of forgotten gods.
The Indian graphic novel space has been steadily evolving, with creators experimenting with new genres and storytelling formats. One such interesting addition is Zoraver and the Lost Gods, published by Bloomsbury India. The book combines history, archaeology and adventure within a narrative set in the early decades of the twentieth century.

Historical Setting
The story takes place during a period when global tensions are rising and Europe stands on the brink of a major war. In the Indian subcontinent, then under the British Raj, rumours circulate about a mysterious ancient text believed to contain clues to powerful lost artefacts.

To investigate these whispers, a secretive wing of the British administration known as the Department of the Reclamation of Wealth is tasked with tracing and recovering such hidden treasures.
The Journey of Zoraver Khan
At the centre of the narrative is Zoraver Khan, a young archaeology student who becomes involved with the department. Recruited for his knowledge and skills, he is sent on a mission that takes him across different regions of the subcontinent.

As Zoraver travels, he deciphers ancient ruins, encounters hidden clues, and navigates shifting loyalties in a politically charged environment. His journey spans several locations, from narrow alleys in London to historical regions of India, including the ancient civilisation site of Harappa.

Along the way, he meets revolutionaries, spies, con artists and scholars. One of the historical personalities appearing in the narrative is the prominent nationalist leader Dadabhai Naoroji, adding an interesting historical layer to the story.
A Blend of History and Adventure
The graphic novel presents an engaging mix of historical fiction and adventure storytelling. Through Zoraver’s journey, readers are introduced to elements of India’s historical landscape, archaeological mysteries and the political realities of the British colonial era.

By combining fictional storytelling with historical references, the book aims to bring an immersive experience to readers interested in history, exploration, and adventure narratives.
Creative Team
Zoraver and the Lost Gods is written by Abeer Kapoor, who brings together elements of history, archaeology and adventure to shape the narrative. The graphic novel is illustrated by Ujan Dutta, whose artwork visually captures the historical settings, landscapes and action sequences that define the story.

Together, the creators present a graphic narrative that blends historical references with a fast-paced adventure set across multiple locations in early twentieth-century India.

Expanding the Scope of Indian Graphic Novels
Historical adventure stories in graphic novel format are still relatively rare in the Indian publishing landscape. With its combination of archaeological mystery, political intrigue and exploration across historical sites, Zoraver and the Lost Gods represents an interesting addition to the genre.

During Delhi Comic Con, we also had the opportunity to briefly interact with the book’s creator Abeer Kapoor. He shared that this project is part of an ongoing experiment with historical storytelling through the graphic novel format, and that the character Zoraver is expected to return with more adventures in the future.
Readers who enjoy comic books and graphic novels, especially those interested in history, mystery and adventure narratives, may find this title particularly appealing. With its blend of archaeology, historical intrigue and action-packed exploration, the story offers a distinctly Indian take on the classic globe-trotting adventure genre.

In recent years, Indian graphic novels have increasingly explored diverse themes and storytelling formats, and Zoraver and the Lost Gods stands as an interesting example of this evolving landscape. By combining elements of history, archaeology and adventure within a graphic narrative, the book introduces readers to a story that travels across historical locations while weaving together mystery and exploration. With the possibility of future adventures for the character hinted at Comic Con by creator Abeer Kapoor, the series has the potential to further expand its narrative universe and continue exploring India’s rich historical backdrop through the medium of graphic storytelling.
