World Wildlife Day Special: How Indian Comics Shaped Our Love for Forests and Wildlife
![]()
World Wildlife Day 2026 – How Indian Comics Promoted Wildlife Conservation.
Wildlife is not separate from humanity, it is part of our survival system. Forests regulate climate, rivers sustain civilizations, mountains maintain ecological balance and animals play crucial roles in the food chain.

Yet, over time, countless species have vanished. Many are endangered. Forest lands are shrinking due to urban expansion, excessive mining, dam construction and deforestation.
We admire wildlife in zoos, but animals truly belong in their natural habitat, The Forest!!
On World Wildlife Day, let us reflect not only as citizens, but as learners. Because long before environmental awareness became mainstream, Indian comics were already teaching us about conservation.
Jungle Protectors from Indian Comics
Indian comics gave us heroes who didn’t just fight villains, they fought environmental destruction.
Bhediya – The Protector of Assam’s Jungles
Published by Raj Comics, Bhediya stands as one of India’s fiercest jungle guardians. Set against the backdrop of Assam’s forests, he fights poachers, hunters and wildlife traffickers.

Bhediya symbolizes the spirit of the wild – raw, untamed, yet protective. His stories often highlighted the dangers of illegal hunting and environmental destruction long before such topics became mainstream discussions.
Phantom – The Ghost Who Walks
Created by Lee Falk, Phantom became iconic in India through Indrajal Comics, Diamond Comics, Euro Books, Regal Comics and now Shakti Comics.

Deep within the forests of Bangalla, Phantom protects tribes, wildlife, and nature from pirates, smugglers, and exploiters. His legacy teaches responsibility, protect the jungle, and the jungle protects you.
Angara – The Wild Guardian of Angara Dweep
From Tulsi Comics, Angara is a unique hero who can communicate with animals. Living among wildlife, he becomes their defender against human greed.

Angara’s character reinforced an important message: animals are not inferior beings; they are companions in the ecological chain. He symbolizes harmony between humans and nature and not dominance.
Mahabali Shaka – Warrior of the Jungle
Published by Diamond Comics, Mahabali Shaka fights invaders, smugglers and exploiters who threaten forest lands and tribal communities. His stories blend action with environmental ethics, showing how wildlife and indigenous life are deeply connected.

Mahabali Shera – The Predecessor of Jungle Warriors
Before Shaka, there was Shera from Manoj Comics. Shera battled mafia groups and criminals to protect his native jungle and its wildlife. He stood as a symbol of strength rooted in nature.

Shaktimaan – The Silent Environmental Defender
From Parampara Comics, this version of Shaktimaan upheld justice and protected the natural balance against evil forces. His jungle-centric adventures echoed the same conservation message.

As awareness evolved, comics transformed hunters into conservationists and warriors into eco-guardians.
Shikari Shambhu – From Hunter to Conservationist
From Tinkle , Shikari Shambhu’s evolution is symbolic.
Once humorously portrayed as a hunter, modern Shambhu is officially a forest ranger and wildlife expert. He rescues animals, protects biodiversity and stops criminals from exploiting forests.

His transformation mirrors society’s growth from hunting wildlife to conserving it.
Bajrangi – The Eco-Kshatriya
From Fenil Comics, Bajrangi is described as an eco-kshatriya warrior devoted to protecting sacred forests, rivers and tribal heritage.

His stories confront illegal land grabbing, pollution, and environmental exploitation, blending mythology with modern ecological activism.
