Born into an indigent family, Azad rose above hardship and dedicated his entire existence to the freedom of India. His indomitable courage, fierce patriotism and unwavering strength of character made him a symbol of sacrifice and resistance. For him, freedom was not merely an aspiration, it was a sacred duty worth dying for.

A Boy Who Chose the Path of Revolution

As a young boy, Chandra Shekhar once ran away to Bombay in search of adventure. Fate, however, had far greater plans for him. During the height of the Non-Cooperation Movement, it was in Varanasi that he first directly confronted British authority. That moment proved transformative and then there was no turning back.

After his arrest as a teenager, he famously declared his name as “Azad” (The Free), his father’s name as “Swatantrata” (Freedom), and his residence as “Jail.” From that day forward, the name became his identity and his vow.

The Revolutionary Who Lived and Died Free

Assuming the surname “Azad,” he became a leading force among revolutionary groups fighting British rule. Through acts of resistance and underground operations, he and his fellow revolutionaries awakened the spirit of freedom in millions of Indians.
Despite relentless efforts, British authorities could never capture him alive. At just 25 years old, surrounded by police in Alfred Park (now known as Chandra Shekhar Azad Park), he chose to sacrifice himself rather than be taken prisoner, living up to his name till his final breath.
